Koningsdag · Monday 27 April 2026
On the King's birthday Amsterdam turns orange from end to end: boats crowd the canals, every street becomes a party and half the city sells old belongings on blankets. Our service runs all day and night, but closed streets change how companions get around, so plan a little and book early.
Koningsdag feels like no other date on the Amsterdam calendar. It celebrates the birthday of King Willem-Alexander, and on 27 April the whole city joins in. Orange clothes are everywhere. Hundreds of boats tie up together on the canals and become floating parties. Pavements turn into an enormous free market, the vrijmarkt, where anyone can spread out a blanket and sell, while music drifts out of open windows. There is no ticket and no single venue; the party is the city itself. It is cheerful, generous and far more crowded than any ordinary day.
Many visitors build an entire trip around the holiday, and with good reason. For our service it works well too, as long as everyone accepts that Kingsday changes the way people move around Amsterdam. That one point shapes all the advice that follows.
On a normal day a companion crosses town quickly; on Kingsday that is not guaranteed. Large parts of the centre close to cars, bridges and canal-side streets fill with people, and from late morning the crowds are thick. Trams are diverted or stopped on the busiest routes. A booking is still possible, though the last few streets are sometimes walked. Guests who have the easiest day plan for this: reserve at least a day ahead, and we will place a companion near your hotel before the streets reach their fullest.
Since the only real obstacle on Kingsday is getting around, the tidiest fix is to avoid moving at all. An eight-hour overnight for EUR 1,250 means one arrival and one departure instead of fighting the closures several times. Your companion can join you in the evening as the street parties reach their height, and crossing a jammed city never becomes an issue. For most Kingsday guests, this is what we suggest. If you would rather include a canal boat party in your day, that works as well; tell us the meeting point and we will plan the rendezvous around the closed roads. Message us on WhatsApp with your hotel and your plans, preferably the day before.
Kingsday is most fun when you let the city sweep you along, and a companion fits that spirit best when she is booked the evening before rather than squeezed into a gridlocked afternoon.
Kingsday has no main stage. The celebration fills the streets, the canals and the markets all at the same time.
That freedom is what makes the day special, and it is also why every booking has to allow for a city that never stops moving.
The holiday brings the heaviest spring demand we see, and the crowds make last-minute plans unreliable.
A request on the evening of the 26th secures your companion and a realistic route to your door.
Much of the centre shuts to traffic, and the crowds are heavy from late morning onward.
We know where the closures fall and plan accordingly, placing a companion near you before the streets fill.
The easiest way to enjoy Kingsday is to take travel out of the equation with an overnight booking.
A single arrival and a single goodbye leave the evening of the celebration entirely yours.
The canals are the heart of the holiday, and boat parties are how many people spend it.
Your companion can meet you at an agreed spot on the quay before you step aboard; just share the plan.
Crowds make an arrival even less conspicuous, and our privacy habits stay exactly the same on the holiday.
No records after the booking and no follow-up contact; on Kingsday the only challenge is movement, never discretion.
Right in the middle of the party; book early and expect some walking.
→Central addresses inside the main closure zone.
→Festive but a little easier to reach than the very centre.
→Calmer hotels outside the core of the street closures.
→Home to some of the liveliest Kingsday street parties.
→Market stalls and music along every side street.
→The Vondelpark children's market and quieter avenues.
→Neighbourhood parties a little off the tourist trail.
→For guests arriving or leaving on the holiday.
→A calmer celebration half an hour away.
→The royal city, with festivities of its own.
→A big orange party of its own to the south.

Kingsday, or Koningsdag, is the Dutch national holiday for the King's birthday, held on 27 April, which is a Monday in 2026. Amsterdam celebrates with real gusto: people dress in orange, boats pack the canals, the streets become one big open-air party and a free market spreads through every neighbourhood.
It is; we work throughout the holiday, with adjusted logistics. Movement is the main issue, since much of the centre is closed to traffic and the streets are packed. We suggest reserving at least a day ahead and thinking about an overnight booking.
Large parts of central Amsterdam go car-free, and the surrounding streets fill with people. Your companion may walk the last part of the way. Booking early lets us place her close to you before the crowds build, so she still arrives within 45 to 60 minutes.
Yes, with an agreed meeting point. Boats are at the centre of Kingsday and many guests spend the day on the water. Your companion can meet you at a chosen spot along the canal before you board, or at your hotel first; just tell us the plan when you confirm.
For most guests, yes. An overnight means one arrival and one departure instead of crossing the closures more than once. Because getting around is so slow on Kingsday, eight hours for EUR 1,250 is the smoothest way to plan the day.
